Speech language pathologists, often informally referred to as speech therapists, provide evaluation and treatment for individuals with communication, cognitive and/or swallowing impairments from newborns to the elderly population.
Speech Therapists work closely with the physician and physical/occupational therapists to determine what therapy is best for the individual person. This is based on many factors, including the individual's:
- Illness
- Disability
- Motivation
- Home situation
- Extent of the speech impairment
Conditions where a speech therapist may be consulted include:
- Congenital problems such as cleft palate or cleft lip
- Stuttering or other problems speaking
- Delayed speech in childhood
- Abnormal childhood languages
- After trauma which results in loss of language
- After stroke which results in loss of language
- After cancer surgery involving the mouth of throat
