Speech language pathologists, often informally referred to as speech therapists, provide evaluation and treatment for individuals with communication, cognitive and/or swallowing impairments from newborns to the elderly population.

Speech Therapists work closely with the physician and physical/occupational therapists to determine what therapy is best for the individual person. This is based on many factors, including the individual's:

  • Illness
  • Disability
  • Motivation
  • Home situation
  • Extent of the speech impairment
Conditions where a speech therapist may be consulted include:
  • Congenital problems such as cleft palate or cleft lip
  • Stuttering or other problems speaking
  • Delayed speech in childhood
  • Abnormal childhood languages
  • After trauma which results in loss of language
  • After stroke which results in loss of language
  • After cancer surgery involving the mouth of throat
