Radiation therapy, sometimes called radiation oncology, is one of many treatment options used to combat cancer. It can be used as the only treatment or combined wtih chemotherapy, surgery, or both.

Before radiation treatments can begin, a medical physicist and radiation oncologist, the physician who specializes in radiation therapy, create a customized treatment plan from a special CT scan.

The typical course of radiation therapy requires treatments for three to nine weeks. During the treatment, the patient remains in one position on the treatment couch while the treatment machine - or linear accelerator - rotates around the patient. Each daily treatment is completed in 15 to 20 minutes.
